Many people take magnesium for cramps, at night, or for daily supplementation, yet notice little effect: no quieter nights, no relief from muscle cramps, and sometimes even diarrhea instead of benefits. The obvious question then usually is whether magnesium helps at all. The truly crucial question is another: Which magnesium is best if you want to supplement it?

Why "Magnesium" in the supplement aisle means many different things
Magnesium oxide, magnesium citrate, magnesium bisglycinate, magnesium taurate appear at first glance to be marketing variants of a single nutrient. Chemically, however, they are different salts, where the magnesium ion is bound to an inorganic or organic counter-ion, such as an oxide, an organic acid like citrate, or an amino acid like glycine or taurine.¹
This binding determines how well the compound is dissolved and absorbed in the small intestine and how much osmotic stress it places on the bowel. The well-known laxative effect of high-dose magnesium preparations is precisely this at its core: undissolved magnesium drawing water into the intestine.
Which magnesium is the best? A look at the study situation
As early as 1990, Lindberg and colleagues compared the absorption of magnesium citrate and magnesium oxide in a human study and found significantly higher bioavailability for the citrate form.² Walker and his team confirmed this in 2003 in a randomized, double-blind study with 46 healthy adults who received 300 mg of magnesium in different forms daily for 60 days: Citrate achieved the highest serum levels, both after the first intake and after two months, while magnesium oxide showed no measurable advantage over placebo.³
A crossover study by Kappeler and colleagues published in the journal BMC Nutrition in 2017 came to the same conclusion: After a single dose, both urinary magnesium excretion and serum levels were significantly higher with citrate than with oxide.⁴ A comprehensive review by Blancquaert and colleagues from 2019 summarizes this pattern as follows: Organic magnesium salts like citrate are generally more bioavailable than inorganic salts like oxide.¹
Oxide, Citrate, Bisglycinate, Taurate: four forms at a glance
Magnesium oxide is the cheapest and most commonly used form, precisely because it delivers a lot of elemental magnesium per capsule. However, the studies described above show that this high value on the package says little about the amount actually absorbed.
Magnesium citrate is the form most consistently described in research as highly bioavailable and is one of the best-selling variants in Germany.
Magnesium bisglycinate is bound to two molecules of the amino acid glycine and is processed via a different absorption pathway in the intestine than classic mineral salts, which makes it particularly stomach-friendly in practice. An older study by Schuette and colleagues from 1994 on patients with surgically shortened small intestines found higher bioavailability for this form than for magnesium oxide.⁵ Because this study was conducted on a group with impaired bowel function, no general numerical value for healthy people can be derived from it. However, it shows that the glycine bond apparently still works even when regular mineral absorption in the intestine is impaired, making bisglycinate a reasonable choice for anyone sensitive to classic magnesium salts.
Magnesium taurate combines magnesium with the amino acid taurine. There are currently no reliable comparative studies on the bioavailability of this specific form in humans. Therefore, it can only be reliably stated that it combines magnesium with a second amino acid independently discussed in research, not that it is superior to other forms in terms of absorption.
Why the form is often more important than the number on the package
A look at the numbers shows how relevant this topic is for actual supply. Since its last revision, the German Nutrition Society (DGE) has set an estimated value of 350 mg of magnesium per day for men and 300 mg for women, a conscious gradation compared to a fixed recommendation, because reliable study data on exact requirements are lacking.⁶
According to the DGE's own statements, the actual magnesium intake in Germany for women averages around 284 mg per day, noticeably below this estimated value, while men are closer to the target range with around 345 mg.⁷ So, for those already at the borderline of supply, similar to other nutrient deficiencies, it makes a measurable difference whether a capsule actually releases its magnesium or is largely excreted unchanged.
This is the core of the answer to the question of which magnesium is best: It's not the highest number on the package that matters, but the form that your body can actually utilize under realistic conditions.
Properly using magnesium in everyday life
For practical application, two things are relevant: How much do you consume and how do you divide it?
The Federal Institute for Risk Assessment recommends a maximum daily intake of 250 mg of magnesium from dietary supplements, divided into at least two individual doses. This recommendation dates from 2017 and is based on studies in which diarrhea frequently occurred above this amount.⁸
However, a current review by Costello and colleagues from 2023 considers the higher limit of 350 mg, which has been in force in the USA since 1997, to be too conservative. In the underlying studies, dosages between 128 and 1,200 mg per day mostly showed no increased risk of diarrhea compared to control groups.⁹ How much is well tolerated in individual cases therefore depends on the chosen form and individual tolerance. Those who take higher doses should divide them accordingly and observe how their own body reacts.
The timing of intake also often depends on the application. For muscle cramps after exercise, magnesium is often supplemented immediately after training.
For calmer sleep, it is usually taken in the evening. Which form is chosen in each case is secondary to the question of whether it is well tolerated and absorbed at all.
Three forms, three tasks: Magnesium in the ARTZT neuro System
Precisely for this reason, ARTZT neuro deliberately uses different forms of magnesium depending on the product, instead of using the same one everywhere.
In Jod (Iodine), magnesium bisglycinate at 57 mg per capsule plays a supportive role alongside the primary focus nutrient iodine: Magnesium contributes to the reduction of tiredness and fatigue. Magnesium is not just magnesium, and which magnesium is best cannot be read from the mg number on the packaging. Several independent human studies show that the chemical form of a magnesium supplement makes a significant difference, both for the amount actually absorbed and for everyday tolerability.
