At your desk, you only get a fraction of the light that helps regulate your rhythm.

Light is one of the factors that sets your body’s rhythm. It regulates when you’re awake and when you rest, how much energy you have each day and how well you recover from it. Anyone who spends most of the day indoors gets hardly any of this for long stretches. This rarely manifests as a single symptom, but rather as a feeling: the day has sapped your energy, which is then lacking in the evening. Sleep comes, but rest eludes you.

Outdoors, the sun provides 100,000 lux, with a high proportion of red and near-infrared light. At your desk, it’s often just 500 lux. And it is precisely these wavelengths that are almost entirely missing.

RED PULSE ONE penetrates specific depths of tissue.

Red light: 630 and 660 nanometres operate in the visible red spectrum, penetrating one to five millimetres deep into the skin and superficial muscles.

Near-infrared (NIR): 810 and 850 nanometres fall within the near-infrared spectrum, penetrating to a depth of one to three centimetres, where muscles, fasciae and joints are located. You cannot see this second set of lights glowing, but it is still operating at full power.

Added to this is the pulsing: the light switches on and off several times per second, rather than shining continuously. The brief dark intervals in between give the tissue time to absorb the light, rather than simply reflecting it. On this basis, you have four frequencies to choose from, ranging from 10 to 100 hertz, each serving a specific purpose.

The panel measures 30 by 21 centimetres and fits on a desk or side table. You simply set it up, select your settings using the remote control or the display, and direct the light straight onto your skin. The timer switches it off automatically when the session ends.

Four wavelengths, two tissue depths

630 and 660 nanometres operate simultaneously in the red light spectrum, whilst 810 and 850 nanometres operate simultaneously in the near-infrared spectrum. These wavelengths are a deliberate choice: the ARTZT neuro RED PULSE ONE thus combines two complementary spectra.

Actual irradiance

200 mW/cm² at 7.6 cm, 165 at 15.2, 117 at 30.5. We state all three figures because a number on its own, without a distance, is meaningless. What matters is the intensity at the distance at which you are actually sitting in front of the device – only this light is actually available to your cells.

Four profiles, one starting point

You can choose between 0, 10, 40 and 100 hertz; red and near-infrared light can be switched on and off individually, and the brightness can be adjusted across five levels. For every situation, you’re given a starting point and an explanation for it: for after work, your workout, late in the evening or before work. You can change these settings at any time.

RED PULSE ONE is that simple to use

Set up the panel, hold it 15 to 30 centimetres away from the relevant part of your body, select your profile on the remote control and put on the glasses. It is important that the light hits bare skin; fabric blocks the light. After ten to twenty minutes, the device switches itself off. That’s all there is to it.

Why the light pulses
Red and near-infrared light can be absorbed in cells by, amongst other things, cytochrome c oxidase – an important enzyme in the mitochondria, the ‘powerhouses’ of the cell. There, light could influence the interaction with nitric oxide (NO) and thus temporarily alter the cell’s energy and signalling metabolism. Pulsed light does not apply this stimulus continuously, but in short pulses with intervals in between. Scientific research is currently investigating whether this allows for a more targeted influence on mitochondrial, NO or other cellular signals.
